The Free Schoolhouse Library

small beginnings - big outcomes

It Started With a Question

How can we restore this Hoosier landmark and bring it back into community life?

In 2022, we turned it into a giant free little library.

It sparked excitement right away. Neighbors jumped in with books, shelves, and support.

Since 2022, community support has only grown. Thanks to increasing visitors and donations, we’ve been able to continue giving books away for free while make important repairs and upgrades to the schoolhouse and its grounds.

Today, this small place carries a big purpose: strengthening literacy, preserving heritage, and bringing community together.

Plan Your Visit

The Free Schoolhouse Library is open seasonally from May through November. Because the building has no electricity and remains true to its 150-year-old roots, we operate during the warmer months when natural light fills the space.

We’re located in Shelby County, Indiana, just steps from the historic Meltzer Woods trails — a quiet, peaceful place to read, explore, and connect with local history.
